Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might be a cause of. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in high school, but she decided to begin performing as a form of social interaction at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California to find theater work. Perry was a part of Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She also played in the role of a older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - an CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her by auditioning for an open role despite having a connection to this character.
