Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might be a cause of. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in high school, but she decided to begin performing as a form of social interaction at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She also played in the role of a older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - an CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her by auditioning for an open role despite having a connection to this character.
